Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President
Summer is quickly approaching an end. The Recreational area is ready for your enjoyment as the new pickleball courts are complete along with new tennis courts. The basketball goal is repaired and the pool is being used by hundreds of members each month. Please be patient and courteous with everyone using these facilities!
Dogs are allowed to be walked on a leash in the grass of the Recreational area, however dog waste must be collected by the owners and disposed of offsite.
Be prepared as September and October are usually our worst Hurricane months. Sign up for "Code Red" to receive phone alerts through the Brunswick County website.
An interesting story-" You get what you give"
"A Pound of Butter" adapted, Author unknown
A farmer sells a pound of butter each week to a baker. The baker decides to weigh it one day and discovers it is less than a pound. The baker was outraged and decided to sue the farmer. In court, the judge asked the farmer how he was weighing the butter. The farmer stated he did not have an exact measuring tool but has a scale.
The judge asks if the farmer uses the scale. The farmer replied, I have been buying a pound of bread from the baker long before he was purchasing butter from me. Whenever the baker brings bread for me, I put it on the scale and then measure out the same weight in butter to give to him in return. So if the baker is not getting a pound of butter, he is also not giving a pound of bread as he promised.
"You get what you give!"

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson
This month the ACC would like to remind everyone about the following items the committee has noticed throughout Carolina Shores community:
We are noticing there has been an increase of Real Estate signs throughout our community. The homeowner is responsible for getting a permit for this and all signs. Please remember you can come to the CSPOA office at 17 Lakeview Court or call the office at 910-579-2044 Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon to apply for a permit or you can go on the CSPOA website at www.carolinashorespoa.org. There is NO fee for this request.
The ACC would recommend to homeowners while working in your garden to look around your property at the following items that may need repair:
1. Driveway headwalls that have damaged and/or cracked brick, concrete or stone walls. Remember that repairs for minor issues will benefit you if taken care of early. If you do not know of a mason who can take care of your problem, please contact the ACC office and we can recommend a qualified mason.
2. HVAC outside units need to be blocked from view (front and sides) with a fence made of vinyl or wood lattice or wood of alternate slat construction. You can also use shrubs to block the view if requirements are met. Please remember whichever one you choose, it must be 6-8 inches above the top of the HVAC unit, this includes shrubs. These requirements include all exterior units such as above ground propane units and generators. If you have any other type of exterior devices, I recommend you call the ACC office to help answer your questions.
I believe all the homeowners in our beautiful community like the title of “Tree City” that has been awarded to the town of Carolina Shores. We are aware that there have been numerous new homesites being built near and around our community. These new homesites are removing ALL the trees on these large tracts of land. They do this to facilitate the easy installation of infrastructure and new homes. This, however, removes the necessary water absorption from the ground that helps stabilize our environment. This is why trees are so important to the Carolina Shores Community.
REMEMBER: CSPOA homeowners need to get a permit from the ACC office for work being done on the outside of their home regardless of whether a contractor gets a permit from the town. With the exception of normal landscaping, anyone who does not get a permit for work being done on the outside of their home may be fined.
JOE’S SAYING: “HELP ME HELP YOU”
Recreation Facilities – Kelly Wilson
RECREATION AREA
We would like to remind all members that the Recreation Area is for all CSPOA members in good standing and their guests to visit and enjoy the amenities offered. Please remember, any member walking their pets in this area to always keep them on a leash, always pick up after your pets and take all waste bags home as receptacles in the recreation area are not for that. Remember, this is not a dog park, that is on another site. We also know that parking at times can be tight and not enough around the rec area and understand that at times parking on the grass is going to happen. We ask all members when needing to park to please park on the pine tree side of the driveway and not to park on the court side.
COURTS
The courts have finally been completed with their new colored surface. Major repairs had to be made to the under surface from water damage in a few areas. That along with low spots around net posts were leveled up. New pickle ball and new tennis nets installed; the courts are open and available for play. We hope everyone enjoys.
Fence posts around the playing perimeter, backboard and bleachers were painted along with players benches power washed, which has completed our goal. I would like to thank everyone who pitched in and helped for all the assistance and hard work that they put into this. It is very much appreciated.
POOL
The CSPOA pool has been in full swing for a few months now. All members and guests have enjoyed the hot days of summer sunning and swimming. Membership visits were slightly down the month of July due to the amount of thunderstorms we received from Mother Nature, but has given us extra hot days also. We still have a few months to go and hope everyone enjoys their time there. Pool attendants have been busy keeping the area clean and greeting people daily with big smiles.
As always, please remember that all guests coming to the pool must be accompanied with a POA member for entry.
Recreation Committee – Mary Ann Williams
The next Happy Hour in the Park (held the 3rd Friday of every month) will be held at the POA pavilion by the pool from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19. This is a great, informal way to spend a casual Friday evening meeting new neighbors and catching up with old friends. BYOB and any snacks you may want or to share.
A new event this year will be “Bring Your Own Picnic” on Labor Day, Monday, September 5! The Recreation Committee will be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers, providing the condiments and you bring your own picnic salads, sides, BYOB, and desserts for you, your family and close friends. The burgers and dogs will be served from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion by the pool. Tickets (free of charge to our residents) will be available at the POA clubhouse from Monday, August 22, through Thursday, August 25, and Saturday, August 27. A member of the Recreation Committee will be available each of those days from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the POA clubhouse (NOT the office) to give out tickets so that we know how much food to cook. Come out and celebrate Labor Day with your family, friends and neighbors!
Also, watch the bulletin and emails for details about our upcoming Oktoberfest to be held on Sunday, October 9. Brats and dogs, with sauerkraut and fixings, will be on the menu!
Additionally, a very special end-of-season Happy Hour in the Park will be held on Friday, October 21 - complete with a DJ and door prizes!

Bowling – James Ratcliff
Gooday from the Carolina Shores Bowling League. Our league has just completed a very successful 2021-2022 bowling season. There were 18 teams that bowled 26 weeks on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. It is a mixed league, requiring at least one member of the opposite sex on each team, and is a non-sanctioned league. We are a handicapped league, with bowlers of all skill levels.
Last year’s cost was only $16 weekly. While we anticipate a slight increase this year, basically you get a night out with friends and neighbors for $16, one night a week. We awarded over $7,000 in prizes this year and are looking forward to a growing new year.
We understand that we have lots of new neighbors in Carolina Shores and our neighboring communities, and are hopeful that some of you will be interested in joining our league for the 2022-2023 season. Watch for our announcements in the monthly Carolina Shores bulletin and the Nextdoor Neighbor website.
We will be organizing our league during a meeting at the bar and grill at Little River Lanes on August 30, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. Our Season begins on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. Don’t worry about the holidays, as we always take a break for Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. We look forward to seeing a lot of new neighbors at our organizational meeting on August 30. If you have any questions, you can email me at: jnavsc@hotmail.com or reach me at: 518-928-4932. Jim Ratcliff, league secretary/treasurer.
Tennis – Joyce Disano
Join us for open tennis starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Carolina Shores tennis courts. Wear proper court shoes. Hope to see you there.
Library – Sue O’Reillyl
For those new to our community and a reminder to all - a few things to remember about leaving donations in our small POA library. Because of limited shelving, please observe the following guidelines:
· Popular fiction or non-fiction with a copyright date 10 years before the present (Now - c2012 to c 2022). This is found usually in back of the title page. Please put all donations in the plastic bin by the window. Our Library Volunteers will shelve them.
· Magazines of general interest of the last two (2) months can be left on the table-(present and 1 month past.)
· Books on disc will be most appreciated (no tape)
· Please NO “how to” books, i.e., crafts, sewing, cooking, gardening, financial, etc. or oversized “coffee table” type books.
· Puzzles are welcomed— put pieces in a plastic bag—none with missing pieces please.
· PLEASE do not leave your discarded books that don’t fit our criteria in the POA Library. This makes extra work for our volunteers who must bag and cart them to the public library to donate.
· Our library works on “the honor system“—take and return at will.
·
The South Brunswick Library near us is a wonderful source of books and media for those specialized subjects and up to date novels. If you haven’t visited yet, you’re in for a treat! Happy reading!
Thanks for your cooperation.
Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs
Our reading selections for July were The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel and House Rules by Jody Picoult. While the two books were completely different in subject, both were meticulously researched and highly enjoyed by most of our group.
The Forest of Vanishing Stars, which takes place during the Holocaust, tells the story of a young girl named Yona, who uses her knowledge of the wilderness to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis as they hide in the forests of Poland. House Rules is the engaging story of Jacob, a teenager with Asperger’s syndrome, as he struggles with his family and his disability while being at the center of a murder investigation.
Our August meeting will be held on Friday, August 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA clubhouse. We will be discussing one book this month, This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger. This book has received many rave reviews, so if you are interested in reading and discussing it with a delightful group of book lovers, please join us!
Care Team – Flo Pflaster
We have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!
For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:
How to control all email notification settings (including groups)
1. Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.
2. Select Settings from the drop-down.
3. Select Notifications from the left menu:
4. Next to Email Notifications, select Edit
5. If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.
6. If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)
Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.
If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.
Thank you,
